FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is Rooibos?

Rooibos is a broom-like plant that grows only in a very niche region of South Africa. The fine stems and leaves are cut to make Rooibos tea, which has been a traditional drink since the 1700s.

What is Red Manna?

Organic Rooibos leaves that have been super-fine cut specifically for use in espresso machines – to be brewed and enjoyed like you would your usual cup of coffee, but with plenty of added benefits, such as being caffeine free.

Why is it called “red” espresso / latte?

The 24 hour fermentation process that the cut leaves undergo turns them red, and this is where the characteristically distinctive red colour, and the name, of the tea comes from. Even more so, when extracted through an espresso machine or stove top pot, the much more concentrated espresso has a vibrant and intense amber colour.
Rooibos (or Red) Espresso is an innovative, popular, and unique drink that is now enjoyed across the globe – it makes tea agreeable and cappuccinos healthy; so much so that it has been decorated with several awards internationally, such as the America Specialty Coffee Association’s “Best New Product” in the Specialty Beverage category in 2008. A bit late to the party, but now finally NZ can join in the excitement of red latte consumption. Woohoo.

Is Red Manna rooibos espresso a type of coffee?
It is not coffee; it consists of only Rooibos. However, it is made exactly like espresso, complete with golden crema. Hmmm.

Why make it like espresso?

It intensifies the unique, heavenly rooibos flavour to create a wholesome and comforting drink. As it is more concentrated, the health benefits are amplified. It will quickly become your go-to alternative latte without ANY additives, caffeine or sugar, leaving you feeling regenerated and relaxed, not wired and on a sugar high.

Do I need to grind it before using?

There is no need to grind (or tamp) rooibos espresso; the particles are an exact grind to use straight away as is.

What does it taste like?

Like manna from heaven. Or more specifically; velvety, rich, wholesome, subtly sweet, full-bodied. Hmmm.

What other ingredients do Red Manna contain?

Zero other ingredients are present, just pure Rooibos is able to create all the hype by itself. Red Manna is an organic, pure and natural product as it contains no colourants, additives or preservatives.
What are the health benefits of rooibos?

The health benefits found in a cup of Red Manna are (practically) bottomless! The properties of rooibos and naturally occurring compounds in it are said to benefit the immune system, assist in detoxing, calming, alleviate stress and anxiety, and stabilise blood sugar. Rooibos is also used in topical applications to assist in skin health and anti-aging.

Rooibos is naturally
-
Caffeine free
-
Sugar free
-
Low in tannins (they are often anti-nutritional and can hinder digestion and metabolism and obstruct absorption of iron)
-
Contains a rich mixture of polyphenols, including flavonoids and antioxidants, such as Aspalathin and Nothofagin (which only occurs in rooibos) and Quercetin.

By brewing it Red Manna style, i.e. as espresso, results in even higher concentrations of these beneficial compounds than a traditionally brewed cup of tea.
Polyphenols and antioxidants protect our cells from damage caused by free radicals by neutralising the molecules and reducing their harmful effect. Free radicals are unstable molecules that can cause oxidative stress and damage to cells and tissues.
When free radicals are present in the body, they can initiate chain reactions that lead to cellular damage and contribute to various diseases, including cardiovascular diseases, cancer, and neurodegenerative disorders, as well as aging.
By neutralising free radicals (donating electrons to free radicals that contain an odd number of electrons), polyphenols and flavonoids (including antioxidants) help protect cells and tissues from oxidative stress, maintain cellular health, and potentially reduce the risk of chronic diseases associated with oxidative damage, such as high cholesterol, leading to clogged blood vessels, heart attack and stroke.
Furthermore, the unique combination of polyphenols present in Rooibos can have the following benefits:
-
Reduce inflammation
-
Lowers cortisol (stress hormone) – may result in better quality sleep and reduces anxiety
-
Aspalathin regulates insulin levels (making Red Manna a great option for diabetics as well)
-
Suitable as a fluid and electrolyte replacement for athletes
-
Rejuvenating and soothing the mind, body and soul

Does drinking rooibos have any negative side-effects?

Nope, negatory negative side-effects to drinking copious amounts of Red Manna. Go for it!
